RIAPA 2018: Rassemblement internations d’art performance autochtone

(French programming available on the website http://riapa.ca/)

Programming RIAPA 2018

Inter nations gathering of indigenous performance art.

SEPTEMBER 14, 15 and 16, 2018

WHERE WILL YOU BE?

////

The RIAPA will be one of the largest manifestations of action art in Canada in 2018. It will unfold over three

days, Friday 14, Saturday 16 and Sunday 16 2018 in Wendake and in Quebec City. Programming: Three

performative events, an exhibition, living archives, discussions, lectures and tributes to the pioneers of

indigenous art.

In our visions of art based on hospitality, adoption and giving, all activities are free, as is the

participation of each and everyone.

/////

CURATOR STATEMENT

Performance art is excessive. Often spectacular while breaking with the agreed conventions of the spectacle,

the artists’ performances amaze, disturb or collude with the public in seeking its participation. The roots of our

imaginaries are ancient, pre-Columbian, and our art forms have demonstrated resilience and resistance over

500 years of colonialism. Since the mid1980s and especially in the two decades, marking the transition to the

21st century (1998-2018), in Canada and Quebec, we observe an effervescence of the savage acts. Savage in the

sense of rebellious. This indigenous action art expresses itself through a process of re ensavagement and

through the renewing of relations. Its emancipatory impulses affect all dealings with life. To understand its

nature and impact, we must adhere to indigenous ethics and epistemological aesthetics. It is a bias: transform

the history of ideas in action in a perspective of decolonization.

The RIAPA, a unique moment with the presence of a significant critical mass of indigenous artists, who come to

gather, create and reflect together on how their actions for art has always expressed our imaginaries and carry

a better future.
